Beginner's Guide

Your First Coin ShowWhat to expect and how to prepare

Coin shows are one of the best ways to learn about collecting. You can see thousands of coins in person, meet experienced dealers, and ask questions. Here's how to make your first visit easy and fun.

Before you go

  • Check the show's dates, hours, location, and any admission fee.
  • Decide what you're interested in, such as a type of coin, a country, or a time period.
  • Set a budget, and decide ahead of time how much you're comfortable spending.
  • Look up recent prices for coins you want so you know what's fair.

What to bring

  • A magnifying glass (5x–10x) to look at details and condition.
  • A notebook or phone to write down prices, dealer names, and coins you liked.
  • Cash, though many dealers also take cards. Ask first.
  • A small list of the coins you're looking for.
  • Comfortable shoes, because large shows mean a lot of walking.

Show etiquette

  • Ask before handling a coin, and hold it by the edges over the table.
  • Never pick up a coin by its face. Fingerprints can damage the surface.
  • If a dealer is busy with another customer, wait your turn.
  • Keep food and drinks away from dealer tables.
  • Keep your purchases secure and stay aware of your belongings.

Talking to dealers

Most dealers love talking about coins and are happy to help beginners. Don't be shy about saying it's your first show.

  • Ask questions: "What makes this one more valuable?" or "How was this graded?"
  • It's fine to ask if a price is flexible. Be polite, and don't lowball.
  • Compare the same coin at a few tables before buying.
  • Ask for a receipt for larger purchases.

Buying smart

  • For valuable coins, consider ones graded by a well-known grading service.
  • If a deal sounds too good to be true, take your time and ask questions.
  • Start small. You'll learn a lot from your first few purchases.
